Witch hazel

Witch hazel is a shrub native to North America. In the mid 18th century, it was imported to Europe by a gardening enthusiast, after hearing an impassioned description from a botanist friend. “Magical are its flowers which bloom in the dark days of winter, bringing a touch of precious light to the garden. Dazzling is its foliage which, in autumn, adorns it with exceptional colors.” The extract from the plant’s leaves is used in cosmetics for its natural astringent and toning properties.
