Purslane
Portulaca oleracea
South Korea
Purslane is native to India and the Middle East. It was introduced to Europe by the English in the 16th century. This succulent plant—with thick, fleshy leaves and stalks—is one of the oldest plants in popular flora which is still used in salads, as a condiment, and for its anti-inflammatory, soothing, and purifying properties. Louis XIV’s gardener considered it a “health salad”—a belief later confirmed scientifically after the discovery of its high content of omega-3 fatty acids. In cosmetics, Purslane extract is used to help soothe the skin.
