<p><strong>The women</strong><br />In 1959, Sara and Yvonne, Hollywood actresses at the time, travelled to Tokyo. During their visit, they encountered homeless children wandering the streets. They took the children to their hotel room for the night with the idea of placing them in an orphanage the next day. Within 3 weeks, they had become surrogate mothers to 100 children and by 1964, the two has established a school, hospitals and nine orphanages in Japan and Vietnam.</p><p><strong>Their fight: « Childhelp »</strong><br />In 1959, Sara and Yvonne created the association to help orphans of mixed race, born and abandoned during the Second World War. Later on, with the support of First Lady Nancy Reagan, the pair began focusing on child abuse and established Childhelp. The foundation is dedicated to helping victims of child abuse and neglect through an approach that focuses on advocacy, prevention, treatment and community outreach.</p><p><strong>What about now?</strong><br />The Hotline receives calls from throughout the United States, Canada, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam. Childhelp's programmes and services also include residential treatment services (villages), children's advocacy centres, therapeutic foster care, group homes, child abuse prevention, education and training.</p>
